BALTIMORE, MD - Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris shared her insights at the National Association of Black Journalists' recent event in Philadelphia, PA on September 17th, 2024. Harris covered a range of topics central to her campaign.

The candidate addressed issues like economic equity, healthcare access, and racial justice—pillars of her platform. Yet despite her comprehensive discussion, some attendees felt that a critical issue—immigration reform—received limited attention.

Audience members shared mixed reactions. "She represents our country well,” said one an, admiring Harris's poise and the wide-ranging scope of her speech. Yet others expressed concern that immigration was notably absent from the main issues she discussed. "Her stance on immigration is unclear," said a student from Temple University, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the room.

In a brief moment on the topic, Harris addressed the concerning issue of harmful rhetoric toward immigrants, condemning divisive comments that have targeted vulnerable migrant communities. The vice president said this kind of attacks on the city and migrants were “lies that are grounded in tropes that are age old.”

As Harris builds her platform for the 2024 presidential race, her nuanced position on immigration might reflect her attempt to appeal to both sides of a politically charged issue. Yet this approach has led to concerns that her stance on reform lacks the detail that many voters seek. Immigration remains a high-stakes topic in American politics, affecting families, communities, and economies across the nation, and voters are increasingly vocal in seeking clarity on candidates' plans.

For the Latino community and immigrant advocates, Harris's position on immigration reform is a pivotal issue. Her previous work as a senator and her time as Vice President has shown her support for immigrant rights, yet many in the community hope to see more concrete steps toward a path to citizenship, protections for DREAMers, and a broader overhaul of current immigration policies. Critics argue that her stance appears unclear, especially since she has primarily worked on migration prevention rather than direct policy reform at the U.S. border.

Harris’s balancing act might appeal to some, but for communities deeply impacted by immigration policies, this balance is not enough—they seek leaders willing to prioritize and advance meaningful reforms.
